Since the surface contact in case of ball bearings is very small, the frictional forces are reduced to minimum. They rotate very smoothly. They may be used under conditions of radial and thrust load. The radial load causes pressure on the sides of the bearings and the thrust load is direct weight.


The special feature of such a bearing is the fact that it shields its rolling parts from external dirt and filth. Usually, special rubber or plastic is used for making such shields.


This kind of bearing is totally sealed and contains lubricants within it. Its design prevents other fluids from entering the rolling area, and simultaneously also stops the lubricants contained within from coming out.

Though ball bearings can bear reasonably big radial loads, they can bear only limited axial loads. So, we can't use these bearings for applications involving heavy axial loads.
